The NZZ wrote of Francesco Piemontesi: "A combination of outstanding technique and extraordinary joy in making music. Rarely has a review summed up the extraordinary talent of this young pianist from the canton of Ticino so aptly and so vividly.

 

Piemontesi studied with Arie Vardi and later with Alfred Brendel, Murray Perahia, Cécile Ousset and Alexis Weissenberg. Award winner in several prestigious competitions (including the Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brussels), he has received international acclaim and was named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2009.

 

Invitations from major orchestras have taken Francesco Piemontesi around the world. He has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus, NHK Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Philharmonia, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Philharmonia and Vienna Symphony. Petersburg Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Filarmonica della Scala, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

 

His podium partners have included Vladimir Ashkenazy, Herbert Blomstedt, Charles Dutoit, Ivan Fischer, Daniele Gatti, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Manfred Honeck, Marek Janowski, Paavo Järvi, Ton Koopman, Fabio Luisi, Joana Mallwitz, Zubin Mehta, Gianandrea Noseda, Antonio Pappano and Yuri Temirkanov. 

 

Invitations have taken him to the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, Verbier, Aix-en-Provence and La Roque d'Anthéron, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Mostly Mozart Festival New York.

Francesco Piemontesi is a passionate chamber musician. He has performed with Leif Ove Andsnes, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Leonidas Kavakos, Heinrich Schiff, Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann and the Emerson Quartet, among others.

 

In 2024, under the direction of Jan Schmidt-Garre, the documentary The Alchemy of the Piano was produced, in which Francesco Piemontesi goes in search of the secrets of classical piano playing.
